A refrigerator error code can mean a fan, a sensor, the defrost system or the power supply. Samsung advises not to unplug the fridge or press panel buttons to clear a code unless told to, because it makes the fault harder to diagnose.
These meanings come from Samsung and LG’s own support pages. We also repair Whirlpool, Maytag, Amana, KitchenAid, Frigidaire, Electrolux and GE refrigerators.
| Code | What the manufacturer says it means |
|---|---|
| 21E | Freezer fan error. The fan is not turning, often because it has frozen up after a door was left open or the gasket has a gap. |
| 22E, 22C | Fridge fan error. Can be caused by running the fridge with the door left open too long. |
| 83E | Compressor abnormal current detected (a power surge or other electrical problem). |
| 85E | Compressor under voltage (a brown out). |
| 86E | Compressor over voltage (a power surge, for example in a storm). |
| 88 88 | Communication fault. Can occur if power is disrupted during start up. |
| PC ER, PC CH | Communication error between components in the refrigerator. |
| 76C or blinking Autofill light | Water detected in the Autofill compartment. |
| OF OF, O FF | Cooling Off Mode (also called demo or shop mode). Service is not required. |
| 5E | Fridge defrost sensor error. |
| 8E, 14E | Ice maker sensor error. |
| 33E | Ice pipe heater error. |
| 39E, 39C | Ice maker function error. |
| 40E, 40C | Ice room fan error. |
| 84C | Compressor lock. |
| Code | What the manufacturer says it means |
|---|---|
| CF | Condenser fan error. The cooling fan is faulty or blocked. |
| FF | Freezer fan error. The freezer fan is faulty or blocked. |
| FS | Freezer sensor error. The freezer temperature sensor has a fault. |
| FU | Cycle error. The freezer has not cooled below 3.5 degrees Celsius, or has warmed above it while running. |
| IF | Ice maker fan error. |
| IS | Ice maker sensor error. |
| rS | Refrigerator sensor error (upper compartment). |
| r2 | Refrigerator sensor error (lower compartment). |

| rT | Ambient temperature sensor error. |
| SS | Water tank sensor error. |
| tt | Water tank missing, not inserted correctly, or its sensor is faulty. |
| C1 | Communication error between the dispenser and the display. |
| gF | Flow sensor error. Can be a closed water tap, a kinked hose or wrong water pressure. |
| CH, CL | Refrigerant leak on the high side (CH) or low side (CL). |
| Lo, HI | Room temperature warning (below -10 or above +50 degrees Celsius). Not a refrigerator fault. |
